Text Box: The Kasey Fennell Scholarship

Kasey Fennell was a little girl who danced with us for the last time in 1994-1995. She was a very precocious little tomboy who loved to dance. She was no different from any little girl who dances with us today.
She loved banana popsicles, softball, board games, watching movies and just playing. Then she was diagnosed with cancer.

She and her family tried very hard to keep life as close to normal as possible. A wig was out of the question when she lost her hair because it was itchy.

When it became necessary she went to school in a wheelchair and then teachers came to her at home.

Despite trips to Duke University and all the doctors’ efforts the cancer became too much for Kasey to fight. On August 24, 1995 at the age of 9 she lost her hard fought battle to the cancer. Her journey was only a matter of months but taught the rest of us a lifetime of lessons.

Every year it has been Dallas School of Dance's honor to reward a dancer with a scholarship named for Kasey. The Kasey Fennell Scholarship is offered to a dance company member that exhibits the same qualities both at dance and in their life as Kasey.

The dance teachers nominate and vote on the students they have worked with and that they deem worthy of this coveted award. The scholarship will pay for the dancer’s tuition for a dance class for the next dance year.

It has been and always will be bestowed on an outstanding dancer, not necessarily for her dance ability but the way she lives life, at our end of the year recital.

We hope every girl who dances with us strives to have her name put on the Kasey Fennell plaque.
